Symbolism And Identity `` Miraculous Images ``...

Materiality and Identity Megan Holmes’s â€Å"Miraculous Images in Renaissance Florence† examines many of the ramifications of materiality. The materiality, an image’s physical properties, has direct impacts on the expression and popularity of immagini miracolose. These sacred images are subjects of miracles throughout the late 13th to 16th centuries. Two of the most important ramifications of materiality include the accessibility of the religious images and manifestation of the miracles. In this essay, I will explain how the physical properties of immagini miracolose create an approachable atmosphere to religious figures for the common people and how the physical properties directly influence the ways in which miracles manifest. By framing†¦show more content†¦Those expensive or delicate images are less likely to be seen by the commoners and, therefore, less likely to be claimed miraculous by large groups. The commoners and large groups often never witness the religious images in wealthy families’ chapels. Miraculous images appear in the main thoroughfares surrounding a church or the main hallways of the church. The commoners pass imposing churches and cathedrals daily, and the buildings and their artwork are likely to become landmarks. Kevin Lynch’s ideas of landmarks best describe the importance of this designation. A landmark is memorable in distinction and importance to an observer, and this memory will add to the description of a community to an outsider. A religious image as a landmark becomes an interconnected symbol of the city or particular social group. Religious images at intersecting points or entrances are also likely to be nodes, an even more important aspect of space described by Lynch. Nodes were locations of decision-making. Worshippers pause at intersections of streets or of church hallways to remember a purpose or location. Miraculous images at nodes were subject to both religious and personal reflection. This personal reflection on the miraculous images and the group reflection of image cults help to form the identities of the plebeian worshippers. The reactions of corporate identities have further complications for the

The problem with this is that it is negatively effecting people and their views Of their self-worth. We will write a custom essay sample on Hollywood’s Negative Impact on Americans’ Body Image or any similar topic only for you Order Now For example there are disorders that are directly involved in the damage to the human body such as anorexia and bulimia. Both of which are disorders that are directly related to the way one sees oneself. In an age where image is everything, natural beauty is a thing that is narrowly promoted. This frame of mind is damaging and is changing the way people perceive beauty. Beauty is no longer modeled after natural body images, but is modeled after tan and toned supermodels with perfect hair and perfect skin. The reality is that not everybody fits this type of beauty. There is not only one form of beauty. Hollywood is guilty for its stars to have an army of makeup artists, hairstylists, wardrobe stylists and personal assistants that insure the star look as perfect as possible at all times. This gives the general public false ideals of what beauty is. Not everybody has an army of people around them constantly to ensure they always look perfect. This is one of the key factors that leads young people into believing a false definition of beauty. The front page of nearly every magazine contains the edited pictures of stars that hardly looks like their true selves. Again, overly traumatizing what the idea of beauty is. Instead of promoting these same liberties in a more natural way, they are depicted as a form of perfection that is highly unrealistic. This in turn promoting perfection instead of individual beauty. This is a continuous problem for America’s societies because it forges unrealistic expectations of what people should look like. These expectations also push people into drastic measures. People have been resulting to extreme dieting to look skinnier or paying to have plastic surgery done. This problem also creates other problems such as stereotypes and not socially excepting people just because they are not attractive. Malcolm’s Speech to England Essay Example For Students

Malcolm’s Speech to England Essay Friends, brothers, countrymen. Here you stand, oblivious to the deterioration, the destruction, the degeneration of part of our Great Britain. The formerly great Macbeth, who fought so valiantly against the Norwegians, has committed the unthinkable. Following his appointment as Thane of Cawdor, greed enveloped his soul, jealousy wrapped her vice like claws around his black heart. And in an act of pure hatred, Macbeth in the dead of night, murdered the beloved King Duncan and took the crown. I come to you this day humbly, on my knees, asking†¦ no†¦ begging you to offer your swords, your shields, your brave courageous hearts to fight this unjust ruler. We must unite. Not under the banner of Scotland, not under the banner of great England, not under the banner of any nation, but under the banner of retribution, the banner of justice, the banner of pride, pride in the brotherhood that holds us together, that binds us as free men. We must join and fight for the sanctity of England, of Wales, of Scotland, to stop this ravenous monster from expanding his hold on us, on our friends, on our families. Now brethren, here we stand, on the eve of a new bleak era for Scotland, aware of abominations of a man who has fallen so far. We must stop the infection before it becomes too large. We must stop him before he turns his eye towards greater things, towards England. When will he stop his ruthless campaign for power? We must stand up to him and meet his fist with ours, fight fire with a blaze of heat and intensity. What say you soldiers? Should we stand idly by as this traitor, this coward, this murderer takes power? Should we allow this Macbeth, this tyrant, this fallen idol, to continue his path of destruction, or should we act. As we speak, brave Macduff and my brother Donalbain stand alone. But not without need. Rally forth men of England. Let us fight for the oppressed, fight for the downtrodden, fight for the dawn that comes after an endless dark night. Arise Englishmen, arise honorable men, arise free men with hunger in your hearts. Hunger for a corrupt ruler, hunger to paint the walls of Dunsinane with the crimson blood of Macbeth and leave his body for the carrion birds to feast on his unrighteous flesh. Alone we are weak but together we are strong, together we can take back what Macbeth does not deserve, together with our noble cause, we cannot be defeated. Ride with me men, ride with me to Scotland and fear no darkness.
